Beautiful Mexican music may make you cry…Joan Baez and OUR Los Gu’iachis!
Joan Baez and Linda Ronstadt were just on Michael Krasny’s Forum at KQED.org, 88.5 FM, 10-11AM to plug their upcoming San Jose Mariachi and Mexican Heritage Festival, the Krasny show to be repeated at 10pm. Linda said music that doesn’t make you cry hasn’t done it’s job and sure enough, some of the featured songs were working just fine. Several Linda and Joan songs brought tears – and just the ideas around how Mariachi music came into being – all the intricate morphings between Mexican and American culture, the way we have a third culture which is a mix of Mexican and American – deeply touching and sometimes the music just part of my own life’s memory.
If you are a devotee of Mariachi music, Joan Baez or Linda Ronstadt, you will want to go to the upcoming San Jose Mariachi and Mexican Heritage festival just coming up September 20-27th. Check that out at Santana takes part, too! See his page at Both Joan Baez and Linda Ronstadt have videos and interviews online. For Joan Baez, go to A whole whelping lot of heart.
Many great lifetime fans called in to Krasny’s Forum show this am and one mentioned finding Linda Ronstadt’s music history on YouTube. I wandered about and especially got into Linda with Phoebe Snow “It’s in His Kiss” at as they dance and sing. Most Mexican songs are found on pages 3 and higher.
Dancing is integral to Mariachi music, says Ronstadt. Sounds right to me! When we hear the high-energy great music of local Los Gu’iachis here in Petalouma – and there’s anything like a dance floor – there are inevitably dancers making happy use of the upbeat sounds. Check out Los Gu’iachis at Aqus Cafe the night of September 26th – sweet, upbeat, dancing music played by our local guys and gal – Chris Samson, Barbara Arhon, Steve Della Maggiora sometime with friend Gus on fiddle…wonderful authentic Mexican music you will love!
Believe I’ll go back to YouTube for more Baez and Ronstadt and maybe some Santana – and feel a bit guilty I haven’t taken more Spanish than I learned in one month and a half in San Blas de Nayarit, the peaceful and gorgeous fishing village with white sand where I lolligagged with books, a guitar and a few hundred tourists one winter. But that’s another short story! Check out Los Gu’achis! You’ll become a fan…
